A keyword gap analysis compares the keywords your website ranks for on Google with the keywords your competitors rank for. The searches they win and you don't are your keyword gap.
It is the fastest way to find content opportunities that are proven. Your competitors already get traffic and customers from these searches, so you know people in your market look for them.
The same questions people type into Google are the questions they ask ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini. The pages that rank for them are usually the pages AI answers cite, so closing a keyword gap helps you in both places.

A keyword gap report can hold thousands of terms. Most of them will never bring you a customer. This is how we pick the ones that will, for the 70+ companies our agency runs SEO and AEO for.
Sort every keyword into one of three buckets before you look at a single number:
Start with buying keywords, even when they show 30 searches a month. Ten buyers a month beat ten thousand readers who will never buy. It's where our clients see first results, often in 2 to 3 weeks rather than the 6 to 12 months people expect from SEO.
If one competitor ranks for a term, it might be luck. If three of them do, your market searches for it and Google expects pages like yours to answer it. Those keywords go to the top of the list.
Keywords where you rank 8 to 30 and a competitor ranks higher are your fastest wins. You already have a page Google considers relevant. Improve it instead of starting from zero:
Look at the page that ranks for each keyword before you write. If the results are comparison tables, a long blog post won't rank. If they are product pages, an article won't either. Match the format, then make yours clearly better.
Group keywords that mean the same thing into one page: "SEO audit", "SEO audit service" and "website SEO check" belong together. Separate pages for each variation compete with each other and none of them ranks well.
The pages that rank on Google are usually the pages ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews cite. Give them a reason to quote you:
SEO and AEO are the same game. A page built this way ranks and gets cited.
A rewritten version of the page that ranks first gives Google no reason to rank yours. Add what only you know: your experience with customers, your own data, honest opinions on what works. That is also what AI answers look for when they choose which source to trust.
Rankings and traffic are how you get there. The result is customers. Track conversions on every page you publish, check whether AI answers start naming you for the same questions, and re-run the keyword gap analysis every quarter. Your competitors keep publishing, so the gap keeps moving.
| Week | Focus | Done when |
|---|---|---|
| Week 1 | Sort gaps by intent and by how many competitors rank. Pick the top 10 buying keywords. | A short, ranked list you can act on |
| Week 2 | Improve existing pages that rank 8 to 30 for gap keywords | Your near-wins are updated and re-submitted |
| Week 3 | Publish the first 2 to 3 new pages for the strongest buying keywords | New pages live, linked from related pages |
| Week 4 | Publish 2 to 3 more, set up conversion and AI mention tracking | Pages measured by leads, not traffic |
Big numbers rarely mean buyers. A 40-search buying keyword often brings more customers than a 4,000-search definition.
Close variations on separate pages compete with each other. Group them into one strong page.
A rewrite of what already ranks gives Google and AI no reason to pick you. Add what only you know.
Updating a page on position 12 is faster than ranking a new one from nothing.
