What is an SEO audit?

An SEO audit is a check of everything on your website that affects how Google and AI search engines find, read and rank your pages. It covers technical SEO (crawling, indexing, speed, links) and on-page SEO (titles, descriptions, headings, content).

An SEO health audit turns those checks into one score: the share of your pages with no errors. The higher the score, the fewer problems stand between your content and the rankings it deserves.

Run an audit when you launch or redesign a site, migrate to a new CMS, see traffic drop, or at least once a quarter. Small problems like broken internal links pile up as a site grows.

Why your SEO audit includes AI search

Can AI read your pages

We check whether your main content is in the HTML and score each page for ChatGPT, Google AI, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude, Copilot and Apple. Content that only loads with JavaScript is often invisible to them.

Are AI crawlers allowed in

We read your robots.txt rules for OAI-SearchBot, Googlebot, Google-Extended, PerplexityBot, Claude-SearchBot and others, and tell you which AI products can and can't use your pages.

How to use your SEO audit to get more customers from Google and AI search

An audit is a list of problems. On its own it gets you nothing. This is the order we work through it for the 70+ companies our agency runs SEO and AEO for, and why.

The short version
  • Fix errors on the pages that make you money before anything else.
  • Make sure Google and AI search engines can reach and read those pages.
  • Then build the pages buyers search for right before they buy. That is where the first customers come from, often within 2 to 3 weeks.
  • Judge the work by leads and customers, not by your health score.

1. Sort every issue by the page it's on, not by its severity

Your report lists issues by type. Re-sort them by page, then split your pages into three groups:

  • Money pages: home, pricing, product or service pages, demo or contact, and any page that already converts.
  • Buyer pages: comparisons, alternatives, "best tool for", industry and use-case pages.
  • Everything else: blog posts, help docs, old news and tag pages.

A warning on your pricing page matters more than an error on a 2019 blog post. Fix the money pages first, then the buyer pages, and batch the rest. Most sites can clear the first two groups in a week.

2. Fix broken pages and broken links on the paths to revenue

Pages that return an error and links that point to missing pages are the issues most likely to cost you leads directly. Someone clicks, hits a dead end, and leaves.

  • For every page that returns 404 or 5xx, decide: bring it back, or 301-redirect it to the closest live page. Never redirect everything to the homepage.
  • Update internal links that pass through a redirect so they point straight at the final address. Every hop wastes crawl time and dilutes the link.
  • Check old URLs that other sites link to first. A dead page with backlinks is authority you are throwing away.

3. Rewrite titles and meta descriptions for buying intent

Missing, duplicate and overlong titles are easy to fix and they change how many people click. Write each money page title for the person ready to buy, not for a keyword tool.

After

Keep titles around 50 to 60 characters and descriptions around 140 to 160. Put the outcome and a reason to choose you in the description, because Google and AI answers both lift text from it.

4. Make your pages readable for AI search

ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google's AI Overviews can only recommend you if they can read you. Three things decide that:

  • Content in the HTML. If your main text only appears after JavaScript runs, many AI crawlers see an empty page. The "Can AI read this page" check in your report shows this per engine.
  • Crawler access. Check your robots.txt rules for OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, Claude-SearchBot and Google-Extended. A rule added years ago "for safety" can quietly remove you from AI answers.
  • Answer-first structure. Start each section with a direct, specific answer in one or two sentences, then explain. Add FAQ and Organization structured data so engines can match your page to the question.

SEO and AEO are the same game. Every fix in this list helps both, and the pages that rank on Google are usually the pages AI answers cite.

5. Fix mobile speed on the pages people land on

Don't chase a perfect PageSpeed score across the whole site. Fix Largest Contentful Paint on your top landing pages on mobile, where most first visits happen.

  • Compress and resize the hero image, and serve it as WebP or AVIF.
  • Add width and height to images so the page doesn't jump while loading.
  • Remove chat widgets, trackers and scripts you no longer use from the pages that matter.

6. Point internal links at the pages that sell

Orphan pages, with no internal link pointing to them, barely exist for Google. Most sites also have the opposite problem: hundreds of blog posts that link nowhere useful.

Link every orphan page from a relevant hub. Then add a contextual link from each related blog post to the matching product, comparison or industry page, using the words a buyer would search. This moves authority from pages that get traffic to pages that get customers.

7. Build the pages buyers search for before they buy

This is the step that turns a clean site into a growing one. Once the technical issues are fixed, the fastest path to customers is bottom-of-funnel content:

  • "Your brand vs competitor" and "competitor alternatives" pages
  • "Best [category] for [industry or use case]" pages
  • Industry and location pages for the customers you want more of
  • Honest pricing and "is it worth it" pages

These searches have small volume and high intent, and they are exactly the questions people ask AI before they choose a vendor. It's where our clients see first results, often in 2 to 3 weeks rather than the 6 to 12 months people expect from SEO. eLogii's earliest leads came from comparison pages that still bring in customers four years later.

8. Measure customers, then re-run the audit

Traffic, rankings and AI mentions are how you get there. The result is customers. Set up conversion tracking on your forms and trial signups, track how often AI answers name you for the questions your buyers ask, and look at both every month.

Re-run this audit monthly and after every redesign, migration or CMS change. New issues appear every time someone publishes, and catching them early is cheaper than recovering lost rankings.

Mistakes we see after almost every audit

Chasing a 100% score

A perfect score on pages nobody visits earns nothing. Stop when the pages that sell are clean.

Fixing the blog first

It has the most pages, so it has the most issues. It rarely has the most revenue.

Looking for shortcuts

Hidden text, AI-bait pages and mass-produced content work for a few weeks at best. Clear positioning and genuinely useful pages keep working.

Auditing once

Sites decay. Every new page, plugin and redesign brings new issues. Make the audit a monthly habit.

Want this done for you? ContentMonk software finds the opportunities and writes the pages, from $99 a month. Or the ContentMonk Agency runs the whole plan, from audit to customers.

SEO audit questions

Is the SEO audit really free?

Yes. Enter your domain and you get the full report, with every issue, page speed results and the AI readability check, at no cost.

What does an SEO audit service include?

A full SEO audit service covers crawling and indexing, on-page setup, content, internal links, page speed and security, plus a prioritized list of fixes. Our free audit runs those checks automatically. The ContentMonk Agency also does the fixes for you.

How long does the SEO audit take?

Most audits finish in a few minutes. Larger sites take longer because we test more pages.

How many pages does the free SEO audit check?

Up to 100 pages, found by following the internal links from your homepage.

What is a good SEO health score?

The score is the share of your checked pages with no errors. Above 80% is healthy. Below 50% means errors are likely holding back your rankings.

How often should I run an SEO audit?

At least once a quarter, and always after a redesign, a migration or a drop in traffic.

Does the audit check Core Web Vitals?

Yes. We run Google PageSpeed (Lighthouse) for mobile and desktop and show LCP, FCP, TBT, Speed Index and CLS against Google's thresholds.
