Ahrefs Review (2026): Nine Years as a Paying Customer

A review of Ahrefs written from nine years of continuous paid use, covering what the data is genuinely worth, what the AI visibility add-ons cost on top, and where the tool has quietly got worse.

Ahrefs has the best backlink data in the category and nobody else is close. The index holds 35 trillion external links and refreshes every 15 to 30 minutes, and Traffic Potential and Parent Topic are the two keyword metrics I would miss most if we cancelled tomorrow.

Base plans run $129 to $1,499 a month with one seat included and no free trial on any of them. AI visibility sits outside that entirely: Brand Radar costs $199 per platform index or $699 for all of them, so a Standard plan with full AI coverage lands at $948 a month.

Look elsewhere, at ContentMonk or a comparable platform, if you want one product that runs your SEO work and watches your AI visibility in the same place. Ahrefs sells those as separate products at separate prices. Platforms that keep both under one roof read all of that data together and help you act on it to improve rankings, earn recommendations inside AI answers, and win more customers.

01 · At a Glance

Ahrefs review at a glance

  • What it is: An SEO platform built on its own web crawler, now marketing itself as an AI marketing platform, covering backlink research, keyword research, technical audits, rank tracking and AI visibility.
  • Pricing: $129 to $1,499 a month across four published tiers, one seat included on everything below Enterprise, no free trial. A $29 Starter plan still exists but no longer appears on the pricing page.
  • Strengths: The largest and freshest backlink index available, keyword metrics that answer strategic questions rather than just reporting volume, and an MCP integration that pulls live data into Claude and ChatGPT.
  • Weaknesses: AI visibility is a separate purchase that roughly quadruples the bill, its AI findings do not connect to any content workflow, its AI visibility history gets rewritten when the index updates, organic position data can lag reality by months, and there is no free trial on any paid plan.
  • Best alternatives:ContentMonk, an AEO and SEO platform that keeps tracking, analysis and execution under one roof, watching ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and Claude alongside your Google rankings and Search Console data, then turning the gaps and opportunities into prioritized recommendations, briefs and finished articles. Google Search Console for ground truth on your own site, Semrush for an all-in-one suite with a trial, and SE Ranking for a cheaper core toolkit.
✓ Best for
✗ Not ideal for
Teams doing serious link research who need the deepest and freshest backlink index available
Teams whose main job is AI search visibility, where the add-on cost outweighs the base plan
SEO practitioners who already know the craft and want depth, filters and drill-downs
Teams who need the visibility data to feed the content work, since Ahrefs keeps those in separate products
Anyone using an LLM as their analysis layer, via the MCP integration on every plan
Buyers who want to try before committing, since no paid plan has a free trial
Agencies and consultants who need five years of history for client trend and seasonality work
Teams of three or more, since every plan below Enterprise includes one seat and extras run $40 to $80 a month

02 · What Is Ahrefs?

What is Ahrefs?

Ahrefs is an SEO platform that crawls the web with its own bot and sells access to the resulting backlink, keyword and ranking data, aimed at SEO professionals, agencies and in-house marketing teams.

Ahrefs runs its own crawler rather than licensing data from someone else, and that decision is the whole product. It is why the backlink index holds 35 trillion external links and refreshes every 15 to 30 minutes while most competitors update daily. Site Explorer, Keywords Explorer, Site Audit and Rank Tracker are all views onto that same crawl, which is why the data lines up across them and why a link you placed this morning appears in the afternoon.

The company no longer calls itself an SEO tool. Its homepage now reads "Your marketing platform, built for search and AI", and the page title describes an "AI Marketing Platform Powered by Big Data". That repositioning matters for anyone evaluating it in 2026, because the AI capability the homepage leads with is almost entirely sold separately from the plan you actually buy.

What are Ahrefs' key features?

  • Site Explorer: backlink profiles, organic traffic estimates, top pages, paid search data and competitor comparison for any domain or URL
  • Keywords Explorer: 28.7 billion keywords across 217 locations, with search volume, Keyword Difficulty, Traffic Potential and Parent Topic
  • Site Audit: technical crawls flagging 170+ issue types, with a Health Score and AI content detection
  • Rank Tracker: keyword position tracking with SERP feature monitoring and competitor comparison, updated weekly by default
  • Content Explorer: a searchable index of 20.8 billion pages, filterable by traffic, links and date
  • Brand Radar: AI visibility tracking across eight AI platforms, sold as an add-on
  • Web Analytics: a free cookieless analytics tool that reports AI referral traffic as its own channel
  • Ahrefs Connect and MCP: live Ahrefs data inside Claude, ChatGPT and Copilot, on every plan
  • Letaido: an AI marketing agent, priced and sold separately from the platform
  • Free tools: Ahrefs Webmaster Tools gives Site Explorer and Site Audit access on sites you verify, at no cost
03 · How We Tested

How we tested Ahrefs

We have paid for Ahrefs for nine years. The account is currently on the Standard plan at $249 a month, and over that period we have used it across client and in-house work at a content and SEO agency: backlink research and competitor link analysis in Site Explorer, keyword research and clustering in Keywords Explorer, technical crawls in Site Audit, and position tracking in Rank Tracker. Most of the judgments in this review come from that, including the ones about how the product has changed.

One important carve-out, stated plainly: we have never used Brand Radar. We do not pay for it, and it is an add-on rather than part of the Standard plan. Everything this review says about Brand Radar, AI visibility tracking, Letaido, Bot Analytics, Ask Ahrefs, Content Kit and Report Builder comes from Ahrefs' own documentation, pricing pages, help centre and changelog, plus verified user reviews. Where a claim about those products could not be verified against Ahrefs' own material, this review says so rather than guessing.

We also read the current review corpus across G2, Capterra, TrustRadius, Trustpilot and Gartner Peer Insights, plus 2026 practitioner discussion on Reddit. Ratings move, so every figure in this review carries the date it was checked.

Ahrefs ships 10 to 15 updates a month. This research was done in July 2026, and specifics will have moved by the time you read it. Pricing and platform coverage in particular are worth checking against Ahrefs' own pages before you buy.

04 · What It Does Well

What Ahrefs does well

After nine years, these are the parts of Ahrefs we would not want to work without.

Backlink data: 35 trillion links refreshed every 15 to 30 minutes

Ahrefs built its own crawler and the backlink index is the result. It holds 35 trillion external links and refreshes every 15 to 30 minutes, against competitors who typically update daily. In practice that means a link you placed this morning shows up this afternoon, and a competitor's new campaign is visible while it is still running. The filtering is where the depth actually pays: you can cut the Backlinks report by DR range, traffic to the linking page, link type, platform, language and first or last seen date.

Annotated screenshot placeholder
Fig 4.a · Italic caption describing what the screenshot shows

Key takeaway: Ahrefs has the largest and most frequently updated backlink index of any SEO platform, and for link research specifically nothing else in the category comes close.

Keyword metrics: Traffic Potential and Parent Topic answer the strategic question

Most keyword tools report volume and difficulty. Ahrefs adds two metrics that change what you do next. Traffic Potential sums the organic traffic the current number one page earns across every keyword it ranks for, so you see what winning actually pays rather than what the single term is worth. Parent Topic identifies the broader keyword driving most of that page's traffic, which regularly tells you the term you searched is the wrong target. The database covers 28.7 billion keywords, filtered down from 110 billion discovered, across 217 locations.

Key takeaway: Traffic Potential and Parent Topic are the two metrics that make Ahrefs a research tool rather than a reporting tool, and no competitor implements either as well.

💡 ContentMonk starts from the other end. It looks at the prompts and queries where you are not cited or ranked, reverse-engineers what it would take to rank for them or get mentioned in those AI answers, and then helps you execute on it.

Technical auditing: 170+ issue types with a Health Score you can act on

Site Audit crawls a site and flags more than 170 technical issue types across performance, HTML tags, hreflang, internal links, images, JavaScript rendering, Core Web Vitals and structured data. It scores the crawl out of 100 and splits findings into errors, warnings and notices, which is the difference between a report you act on and a list you ignore. It also detects AI-generated content across crawled pages and shows the distribution across the site. As of May 2026 the issues view includes a "Fix with Agent A" action and an option to copy findings as markdown for an LLM.

Key takeaway: Site Audit is thorough enough for most in-house and agency technical work, though advanced technical SEOs still reach for Screaming Frog on the hardest crawls.

The MCP integration: live Ahrefs data inside Claude and ChatGPT, on every plan

This is the best thing Ahrefs shipped recently and it markets it barely at all. Ahrefs Connect exposes the platform through MCP, so you can query live Ahrefs data from inside Claude, ChatGPT or Copilot rather than clicking through reports. As of April 2026 it renders interactive widgets in Claude and ChatGPT and is listed in the ChatGPT apps directory. It is available on Lite and above, with monthly integration units running from 100,000 on Lite to 2 million on Enterprise. G2 reviewers and r/SEO both raise it unprompted, and the highest-scoring comment we found on the subject describes someone running a weekly automated read through Claude specifically to avoid the Ahrefs interface.

Key takeaway: The MCP integration is included on every paid plan and turns Ahrefs into a data source an LLM can query directly, which is quietly the most useful thing to happen to the product in years.

💡 ContentMonk ships API, MCP and webhooks on every plan, starting at $99 a month. Both your AEO and your SEO data are queryable from inside ChatGPT or Claude, so you can build reporting and automation workflows on top of your own visibility and ranking data without upgrading to a higher tier to get access.

Interface and education: better than the reputation suggests

Ahrefs has a reputation for being hard to learn, and the data does not really support it. On G2 the most common positive theme is the interface being intuitive and accessible to beginners, and it comes up far more often than the learning curve does. Where reviewers do struggle, the complaint is usually breadth rather than complexity: there are a lot of sub-tools and it is not obvious which you need. The education offsets much of that. Ahrefs Academy, the blog and the YouTube channel are praised by people who do not pay for the tool, and one TrustRadius reviewer argues Ahrefs has the shortest learning curve of the major platforms because of it.

Key takeaway: Ahrefs is straightforward for anyone with SEO experience, and its free education is good enough that the learning curve is a real cost only for complete beginners.

05 · Where It Falls Short

Where Ahrefs falls short

Ranked by what actually costs you money or leads you to a wrong decision.

AI visibility is a separate purchase: Brand Radar adds $199 to $699 a month on top of your plan

Ahrefs' homepage leads with AI. Its pricing page puts almost all of it behind add-ons. Brand Radar costs $199 a month per AI platform index, or $699 a month for all of them. That sits on top of a base plan of $129 to $1,499. A Standard plan with full AI platform coverage costs $948 a month, and adding Content Kit for the AI writing tools and Report Builder for client reporting takes it to $1,146. Base plans do now include a small allowance of custom prompt checks, from 150 a month on Lite to 600 on Advanced, which is enough to sample a handful of queries rather than run a program.

Reviewers have noticed. "Pricing is too high, especially with the separate pricing for the AI overview data" is a G2 review from July 2026, and add-on cost is the fastest-rising pricing complaint in the 2026 corpus.

Key takeaway: Ahrefs' AI visibility tracking is real and reasonably broad, and it roughly quadruples the cost of a Standard plan, which makes it hard to justify for teams whose main job is AI search visibility.

💡 ContentMonk includes AI visibility tracking on every plan from $99 a month, running ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and Claude daily rather than charging per engine.

AI visibility findings stop at the dashboard: the tools that would act on them are separate products

Brand Radar will show you that a competitor gets cited in ChatGPT for a prompt where you do not appear. Acting on that is a different purchase. The AI Content Helper and Content Grader sit inside Content Kit at $99 a month more, and they grade a draft you have already written rather than starting from a visibility gap. Letaido, Ahrefs' AI marketing agent, is priced separately again at $99 a month plus workspace tiers. Site Audit's "Fix with Agent A" applies to technical issues rather than to citation gaps.

Ahrefs ships plenty of AI tooling. None of it takes a Brand Radar finding and returns a brief or an article aimed at closing it, so the work of turning a citation gap into a published page sits with you and whatever else you are paying for. Since we do not pay for Brand Radar, Content Kit or Letaido, this reflects how Ahrefs packages and prices those products rather than a workflow we have run ourselves.

Key takeaway: Ahrefs ships AI writing and agent tools, and each is sold and priced separately from Brand Radar, so no single workflow carries an AI visibility gap through to a finished page.

Brand Radar's history gets rewritten: a June 2026 methodology change was applied retroactively

Ahrefs' own changelog records that on 3 June 2026 the Impressions and Share of Voice metrics were changed to exclude pages that were found but not cited, and that the change was applied retroactively across historical data. A G2 reviewer from an enterprise IT background independently reported the same behavior in May 2026, saying metrics change retroactively on every index update and that they had observed it across multiple brands over eight months.

Since we do not pay for Brand Radar, this comes from Ahrefs' documentation and that review rather than our own observation. Separately, Grok is listed as a tracked platform on three Ahrefs pages while its help documentation states data collection is currently suspended, and sentiment tracking is marketed on the homepage but appears in no product documentation, help article or API field we could find.

Key takeaway: Brand Radar's historical AI visibility figures are not stable across index updates, which makes them unsuitable for reporting trends to a board or a client without caveats.

Position and traffic data can lag reality by months: recrawl frequency dropped after Google changed the SERP

Google removed the &num=100 search parameter in September 2025, which forced every SEO platform to rebuild SERP collection around pagination at roughly ten times the request cost. The consequence at Ahrefs looks like staleness rather than error. In an r/SEO thread from May 2026, a site owner documented that 75% of the keywords Ahrefs showed as lost or declined had not been recrawled since early February, roughly three months, and that those keywords accounted for over 60% of the reported traffic decline. Several had in fact recovered. A Capterra reviewer made a related argument in September 2025, saying Ahrefs had stopped tracking positions beyond the first page and that agencies should stop treating its traffic figures as a reference point.

To be fair about it, this is a category problem rather than an Ahrefs defect, and every tool relying on scraped SERPs faces the same economics. It matters here because Ahrefs traffic charts still read as current when the underlying data may not be.

Key takeaway: Treat Ahrefs organic traffic and position trends as directional rather than current, and check anything that looks like a sudden decline against Google Search Console before acting on it.

No free trial and one seat per plan: evaluating it and sharing it both cost extra

Ahrefs does not offer a trial of Lite, Standard, Advanced or Enterprise. The pricing FAQ confirms no trials and no discounts. Reviewers raise it unprompted as a purchase blocker, including a May 2026 G2 review that describes the paid commitment upfront as making the tool difficult to evaluate properly. Every plan below Enterprise then includes exactly one seat, with additional users at $40 to $80 a month each, which one Capterra reviewer described in March 2026 as making it terribly costly to share access across a marketing department.

Credit where it is due: the free tier is genuinely substantial rather than a demo. Ahrefs Webmaster Tools gives you Site Explorer and Site Audit access for any site you can verify ownership of, at no cost, and several 2026 reviewers rate that free offering highly without being asked about it. There is also a $29 Starter plan, though you now have to find it through ahrefs.com/free because it has been removed from the pricing page.

Key takeaway: You cannot trial a paid Ahrefs plan and every plan below Enterprise includes one seat, so a three-person team on Standard costs $369 a month before any add-ons.

💡 ContentMonk runs a 7-day free trial on whichever plan you pick, and every plan includes three users, so evaluating it and sharing it across a team do not cost extra.

Paying customers report being locked out for "suspicious activity": the fastest-growing complaint in the 2026 reviews

Six of the twenty most recent Trustpilot reviews reference account blocking in their headline. The theme appears in five reviews since January 2025 and in none before that, so it is genuinely new rather than long-standing. The shape repeats: a customer on a $249 plan doing manual research with no automation gets locked out of reports for days or weeks, and support declines to explain the trigger, citing a policy of not disclosing specifics to avoid abuse of the tool. Ahrefs' public position is that these are automatic security triggers rather than manual decisions.

We have not experienced this on our own account in nine years, so this is a reported pattern rather than something we can confirm first-hand. It is worth knowing about because the reviews describe losing access to something they had already paid for.

Key takeaway: A recurring and growing set of 2026 reviews describe paying customers losing report access to automated "suspicious activity" blocks with no explanation of the cause, which is worth weighing if uninterrupted access matters to your work.

06 · Pricing

Ahrefs pricing: is it worth it?

Ahrefs publishes four tiers from $129 to $1,499 a month, each including exactly one seat, with a fifth $29 plan that has quietly left the pricing page, and the AI visibility features the homepage advertises are sold separately on top. Most buyers land on Standard at $249 a month, because it is the first tier with unlimited report credits and two years of historical data.

All figures below were read from Ahrefs' pricing page on 30 July 2026. Monthly prices are shown; annual billing saves up to 17%.

Plan
Price
What you get
What's missing
Starter
$29/mo
1 project, 200 credits a month, core access to Site Explorer, Keywords Explorer, Site Audit and Rank Tracker
Removed from the pricing page, findable only via ahrefs.com/free. Severely credit-limited
Lite
$129/mo (annual $108)
5 projects, 750 tracked keywords, 6 months of history, 1,000 credits per user, 100k crawl credits, API and MCP access
Credit-metered, so heavy research days run out. Only 2,500 rows per report. 6 months of history is thin for trend work
Standard
$249/mo (annual $208)
20 projects, 2,000 tracked keywords, 2 years of history, unlimited credits, 500k crawl credits, 30,000 rows per report
Still one seat. No Looker Studio. 300 custom prompt checks a month is a sample rather than a program
Advanced
$449/mo (annual $374)
50 projects, 5,000 tracked keywords, 5 years of history, 1.5M crawl credits, 75,000 rows per report, Looker Studio, batch analysis
One seat included, extra seats $80 each. Segmentation still listed as coming soon
Enterprise
$1,499/mo (annual commitment)
100 projects, from 10,000 tracked keywords, unlimited history, from 5M crawl credits, uncapped API, from 3 seats
Annual commitment required. A large jump from $449 with no tier in between

Add-ons and what they really cost

The add-on stack is where the real bill gets decided. Brand Radar is $199 a month for a single AI platform index or $699 for all of them. Content Kit, which holds the AI Content Helper and Content Grader, starts at $99 a month. Report Builder is $99 a month for the full version, though base plans now include a limited allowance of 5 to 25 reports. Project Boost is $20 a month per project for always-on auditing, or $200 a month per project for the version that includes daily rank tracking and Patches. Letaido, the AI marketing agent, is priced separately again at $99 a month plus workspace tiers.

Stacked up, a Standard plan with full AI platform coverage, the content tools and full client reporting reaches $1,146 a month. That is the number to compare against, rather than the $249 headline.

Key takeaway: The published plan price is roughly a quarter of what full AI visibility and content functionality actually costs on Ahrefs, so price the add-ons you need before comparing it to anything else.

How the credit meter works

On Lite, most actions consume credits: pulling a report, running a keyword lookup, exporting data. The allowance is 1,000 credits per user a month, raised from 500 in April 2026. Standard and above are unlimited under a fair use policy, which is the single strongest reason to skip Lite. Crawl credits are metered separately on every tier, from 100,000 a month on Lite to 5 million on Enterprise, and they govern how much of your site Site Audit can cover.

The credit model attracts real anger on review sites, appearing in roughly 30% of recent Trustpilot reviews and as an explicit dislike theme on G2. It barely registers among practitioners talking to each other though: across 22 r/SEO and r/TechSEO threads from 2026 we found no comments raising credits at all.

Key takeaway: Lite's credit meter makes sustained research frustrating, so if Ahrefs is a daily tool for you, Standard at $249 is the real entry point rather than $129.

💡 ContentMonk meters credits on output rather than on lookups. One word of output is one credit, and tracking your prompts and writing your articles do not draw on them at all.

Is there a free trial of Ahrefs?

No. Ahrefs does not offer a free trial on any paid plan, and its pricing FAQ states there are no trials and no discounts. The two ways to evaluate it without committing are Ahrefs Webmaster Tools, which is free and gives Site Explorer and Site Audit access on sites you verify, and the $29 Starter plan, which now lives at ahrefs.com/free rather than on the pricing page.

Refunds are discretionary. Ahrefs' terms state that refunds are not generally given, though monthly subscribers can request one for an unused subscription and the request may be declined. At least one 2026 Trustpilot reviewer thanks the team for granting one, so it is not an absolute.

Key takeaway: There is no trial of any paid Ahrefs plan, so evaluate through the free Webmaster Tools tier or the $29 Starter plan before spending $129 a month.

Two notes on reading that table. Capterra and Software Advice publish the same 585-review corpus because both are Gartner Digital Markets properties, so they are one data point rather than two. And the gap between 4.5 on G2 and 2.1 on Trustpilot is not a contradiction in the data, it reflects two different populations. G2, Capterra and Gartner collect from people evaluating a tool for work, often prompted, frequently on seats someone else pays for. Trustpilot is unprompted and functions as a billing complaint channel: its distribution is 50% one-star and 24% five-star, with almost nobody in the middle, and it is dominated by pricing, credits and account access rather than by anything about data quality.

The complaints cluster in a clear order. Price is the largest by a wide margin, appearing in roughly 119 of G2's 711 reviews across its various pricing-related tags, and value for money is the only Capterra sub-score below 4.5 at 4.2. Add-on cost creep is the fastest-rising 2026 variant of that, with reviewers specifically naming the separate charge for AI overview data and the cost of extra seats. Account blocking for "suspicious activity" is the leading theme in the most recent Trustpilot reviews and did not exist before 2025. Data accuracy complaints are real but smaller than their reputation, and a meaningful share of them turn out to be users expecting total traffic from a tool that only estimates organic search traffic.

Support splits cleanly in two, and averaging it would be misleading. Routine product support rates well, 4.5 on Capterra, with named praise for individual support staff in G2 reviews. Billing disputes and account restrictions are where reviewers describe policy recitation and bot replies instead of resolution. Those are two different experiences of the same company.

Practitioner discussion has moved somewhere else entirely. Across 2026 threads in r/SEO, r/bigseo and r/TechSEO, the live argument is whether third-party SERP data is still worth paying for, with Google Search Console and Analytics mentioned more often than any tool except Semrush. The consensus is not that Ahrefs is bad, it is that Ahrefs is for finding opportunities while first-party data is for measuring results. Notably the price complaint has flipped direction in those threads, with several practitioners now calling Ahrefs the cheaper option against Semrush.

08 · Who It's Right For

Who Ahrefs is right for

Choose Ahrefs if...

  • Link research is central to your work and you need the largest, freshest backlink index available, refreshed every 15 to 30 minutes
  • You want keyword metrics that tell you what to target rather than just how many people search for it, specifically Traffic Potential and Parent Topic
  • You have SEO experience already and want depth, filters and drill-downs rather than guided workflows
  • You want to query live SEO data from inside Claude or ChatGPT, which the MCP integration supports on every paid plan
  • You need five years or more of historical data for trend and seasonality work, which Advanced and Enterprise provide

Look elsewhere if...

  • AI search visibility is your main job rather than a side project, because the Brand Radar add-on roughly quadruples the cost of a Standard plan
  • You need the visibility data to feed the content work that closes the gap, which ContentMonk does in one workflow
  • You report AI visibility trends to a board or a client, since Brand Radar restates its historical figures when the index updates
  • You want to try before you buy, since no paid plan has a trial. Semrush and SE Ranking both offer one
  • Your team needs several seats, since every plan below Enterprise includes one and extra seats run $40 to $80 a month each
  • You are measuring your own site's traffic and rankings rather than researching competitors, in which case Google Search Console is free and is ground truth
  • You need to track your position in the Google map pack, which Ahrefs has never supported. Semrush or a dedicated local SEO platform will

Ahrefs alternatives

  • Semrush: The closest like-for-like, from $139 a month. Broader all-in-one coverage including PPC, social and PR, materially stronger local SEO with map pack tracking, a 7-day free trial, and AI visibility tracking included in its paid tiers rather than sold as an add-on. The most-named Ahrefs alternative among practitioners.
  • Google Search Console and GA4: Free, and ground truth for your own site's clicks, impressions and positions. No competitor data at all, so it complements Ahrefs rather than replacing it.
  • SE Ranking: $129 a month for its Core plan, matching Ahrefs Lite on price while including 100 AI prompts tracked daily across five LLMs, 25 articles a month, and map pack tracking. A 14-day trial with no card required. The backlink index is smaller than Ahrefs'.
  • Screaming Frog: A desktop crawler that advanced technical SEOs consider more thorough than Site Audit, sold as a license rather than a subscription.
  • DataForSEO: Raw SEO data via API at cost, for teams willing to build their own reporting. The escape hatch from platform pricing, and it needs engineering time.
  • ContentMonk: An AEO and SEO platform that keeps tracking, analysis and execution under one roof. It watches ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and Claude daily alongside your Google rankings and Search Console data, then turns the gaps and opportunities into prioritized recommendations, research-backed briefs, finished articles and social repurposing. From $99 a month, with a 7-day trial and three users on every plan. It has no backlink index, so it does not replace Ahrefs for link research.

Ahrefs wins outright on backlink index, keyword database, technical audit depth and historical range. ContentMonk carries honest ✗ on backlink index, technical crawling, map pack and certifications. Semrush and SE Ranking figures verified live on 30 July 2026 from their own pricing pages.

11 · Our Verdict

Our verdict on Ahrefs

Ahrefs earns its price for one job better than anything else in the category, and that job is research. The backlink index at 35 trillion links refreshed every 15 to 30 minutes has no real rival, and Traffic Potential and Parent Topic are the reason our keyword research still happens here after nine years rather than somewhere cheaper. If you are doing link work or competitive research and you have the craft to use depth when you get it, this is the tool, and the free education around it is better than most paid courses.

What it costs you is worth being clear-eyed about. One seat on every plan below Enterprise, no trial on anything, credit metering that makes Lite frustrating enough that Standard at $249 is the honest entry point, and a growing set of reviews from paying customers describing unexplained lockouts. The bigger issue for 2026 buyers is that the data has quietly got less current: recrawl frequency dropped after Google removed the &num=100 parameter, and organic position and traffic trends can lag by months while still looking live. That is a category problem rather than an Ahrefs failing, and it changes how much weight those charts deserve.

The place to think hardest is AI visibility. Ahrefs' homepage now sells an AI marketing platform, and Brand Radar genuinely covers eight platforms with a large prompt database behind it. It also costs $199 a month per platform index or $699 for all of them, on top of a plan that already starts at $129, which puts a Standard plan with full AI coverage at $948 a month. Its historical figures get restated when the index updates, and it is diagnostic by design: it will show you that competitors get cited instead of you, and it will not help you change that.

If AI search visibility is a side project next to your link and keyword work, keep Ahrefs and skip the add-on. If it is the main job, the maths stops working, and ContentMonk tracks ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and Claude daily alongside your Google rankings from $99 a month, then turns each gap into a brief and a finished article in the same workflow. Plenty of teams run both, using Ahrefs for the link and keyword depth it owns and ContentMonk for the AI visibility work and the content that follows from it.

Ahrefs review FAQ

What is Ahrefs?

Ahrefs is an SEO platform that crawls the web with its own bot and sells access to the resulting backlink, keyword and ranking data. It covers backlink research, keyword research, technical site audits, rank tracking and AI visibility, and is aimed at SEO professionals, agencies and in-house marketing teams. It was founded in 2010 and is based in Singapore.

Is Ahrefs free?

Ahrefs has a free tier called Ahrefs Webmaster Tools, which gives you Site Explorer and Site Audit access for any website you can verify you own. It is genuinely useful rather than a demo. The paid plans start at $129 a month, plus a $29 Starter plan that no longer appears on the pricing page but is still available through ahrefs.com/free.

Does Ahrefs have a free trial?

No. Ahrefs does not offer a free trial on any paid plan, and its pricing FAQ confirms there are no trials and no discounts. To evaluate it without committing, use the free Ahrefs Webmaster Tools tier on a site you own, or buy the $29 Starter plan for a month. Competitors including Semrush and SE Ranking do offer trials.

Is Ahrefs worth the money?

For link research and keyword research it is worth it, because the backlink index and the Traffic Potential and Parent Topic metrics have no real equivalent. It is harder to justify if AI search visibility is central to your work, since Brand Radar adds $199 to $699 a month on top of your plan and does not connect to any content workflow, or if you need several seats or local map pack tracking. Most buyers should budget for Standard at $249 rather than Lite.

How much does Ahrefs cost in 2026?

Ahrefs publishes four tiers as of July 2026: Lite at $129 a month, Standard at $249, Advanced at $449 and Enterprise at $1,499. Annual billing saves up to 17%, bringing those to $108, $208 and $374. Each plan below Enterprise includes one seat, with extra seats at $40 to $80 a month. Add-ons including Brand Radar, Content Kit and Report Builder are priced separately.

How accurate is Ahrefs data?

Backlink data is the most comprehensive and frequently updated in the category. Organic traffic and position data should be treated as directional, and in 2026 it can also be stale: recrawl frequency dropped across the industry after Google removed the &num=100 parameter in September 2025, so declines Ahrefs reports may reflect keywords that have not been recrawled for months. Ahrefs estimates organic search traffic only and does not measure total traffic.

Can Ahrefs track AI search visibility?

Yes, through Brand Radar, which covers Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot, Grok and Claude, though Grok collection is currently suspended and Claude works through custom prompts only. Brand Radar is an add-on at $199 a month per platform index or $699 for all of them. It reports visibility and does not produce recommendations or content.

What's the best alternative to Ahrefs?

It depends which job you are replacing. For AI search visibility, Semrush from $139 a month and SE Ranking from $129 both include prompt tracking in their paid plans rather than charging for it separately, and ContentMonk covers it from $99 a month along with the content production that follows from it. Google Search Console is free and better for measuring your own site. For backlink depth specifically, nothing matches Ahrefs.
